Stargazing: Rule ~ Iro Asenai Hibi - Sakamoto Maya
For as long as I have known, I've enjoyed the musical endeavours of Sakamoto Maya. She is an incredibly talented vocalist with an even more incredible talent for actually composing, voice acting and playing guitar on top. In her album Lucywhere she actually wrote lyrics for 7 tracks and also incorporated her own acoustic guitar into the background of many of the songs, we were graced with 'Rule ~ Iro Asenai Hibi'.
This is a gorgeous song, and I'm ashamed to say I hadn't heard it until just this year. I was first exposed to Sakamoto Maya's work way back when she first performed the third opening song for Cardcaptor Sakura, which turned out to remain one of my favourite singles of all time. Since then, I've heard her in Kofuku Graffiti, Macross Frontier, Tamayura and Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha. She even performed the recent ending track for the currently airing series Gakusen Toshi Asterisk. While her contributions to all of these series (and even more) were fantastic, today's song is currently resounding over most of them for me.
I always get a rising sense of hope listening to this song. The acoustic guitar adds such a layer of depth to the instrumentals, and the song is always on a upwards incline towards the chorus, which sounds just breathtaking. I picture one of those astounding visuals of a gradient-bled sky saturated with deep oranges, reds, blues and purples, and Sakamoto Maya herself encapsulating anyone who draws near the song with her pure talent alone. For those of you who are in need of a little pick-me-up this holiday season, I hope this is a song that does it for you.
